Welcome

The astounding diversity of plants is fundamental to all forms of life.

The mission of the Department of Systematic and Evolutionary Botany and its associated collections (the New and Old Botanic Gardens, Herbarium, and Library) is to:

  • increase knowledge about plant diversity, the processes and patterns of plant evolution, the relationships between plants and other organisms and aspects of plant conservation.
  • organize this knowledge using information systems that allow efficient retrieval of data about plant diversity held in living and preserved collections
  • disseminate established and cutting-edge knowledge of plants to the scientific community, students at all stages from kindergarten to University, and the general public through lectures, courses, field excursions and exhibitions.
  • The short film ‘An Island of Plant Diversity’ [only available in German] will allow you to get to know us better – it introduces our institute and the botanic gardens and some of the questions that underpin our research.
